saint malo to nantes: goodbye france

dear friends,

so another coup out post.

so after all the complains and hate mails that i have been receiving, i will be nice with my postings from now on and not write anything that will portray myself as being nasty. i will censor stuff on this post and put the uncensored one on another site. but
seriously, i am actually really really nice.

how is everyone doing by the way, instead of complaining, how about some updates on your lives ? i would so love to hear about what i have been missing down under too. its not a one way street u know.

anyway ...

Saturday 20th : Rennes

Day 37

(great recovery at rennes)

great. absolutely fantastic. i finally managed to get out of bed, caught the train and made my way all the way to rennes. my chest still hurt but no longer that much. i m finally exploring again. i actually feel as if its the first day of my trip again. the same feeling i had when i landed in amsterdam. felt so alive and well. also i m happily snapping away with my camera. rennes is a very nice city. somewhat reminiscent of strasbourg and carcassonne combined. every corner is interesting and inviting. there were some kind of demonstration there. i couldn't read what they were going on about nor i care if i did anyway. i just walked around them. just when i thought my luck has turned, i got another LOUD snorer in my room. this time i got up and sleep in the common room. as quiet it may be there, i woke up with a chest AND back pain ! hell. decided i hate this place now, i packed up and left.

Sunday 21st: St. Malo revisited - Day 1
Day 38

(st-malo: sunny days are here to stay)

an absolutely beautiful day to arrive. the sun was out and it was actually warm for a change.

didnt find chai-i. i guess she must have went to the mont saint michel to see the tides. instead, i went to sit by the beach to just chill and relax. also will go and have pizza at the same restaurant on my previous visit. got this sudden craving for pizza.

chai-i came looking for me in the evening. apparently she decided not to stay there because the tides only comes twice a month. every 15th and 30th of the month. instead, we went to the old city and have a really good dinner. we found this really cool little restaurant that serves local food. had a great night.

Monday
22nd: St. Malo revisited - Day 2
Day 39

the sun went away today. it was absolutely freezing. we went to the old city to hang out instead. chai-i had this craving for spaghetti and i had my pizza craving. we managed to find this other really cool cafe that serves both spaghetti and pizza. i resisted the pizza eventhough when i looked around at other people's pizza
, they looked so good. i am saving my pizza craving for tonight, back to the other shop. when chai-i saw the pizzas, she couldn't resist it either. she held back and got her spaghetti.

we hung out at a really cool coffee bar after lunch. again, small, interesting and only patronized by locals. very nice.

the journey back to the hostel was a killer. it was freezing. it was nice and warm back at the hostel. anyway, i kinda made chai-i get out of the hostel to the pizza place. she swore at me all the way to the resta
urant coz it was fucking cold and u know what ? when we reached the restaurant, it was closed. hah. we decided to skip dinner because it was a bloody long walk to the old city. We met a really cool canadian traveler but i think i shocked him with my inquisition ice-breaking question. hah.

Tuesday 23rd: St. Malo revisited - Day 3 + Dinan
Day 40

(dinan: nice)

woke up today to a beautiful day. so we decided to stay another day. w
e decided to do a day trip. we worked out that the only bus to dinan was at 12.30. chai-i still had spaghetti craving, so we headed to the same lunch place. same situation. we resisted and ordered the same thing.

(dinan: cats galore)

dinan is beautiful. so glad we came. such an amazing old city. we walked around the place, stalked a few people and relaxed. i will let the pictures sp
eak for themselves.

(dinan: nice)

the bus back to saint-malo didn't come. so we had to run to the train station to
catch the last train back. we kinda just made it.

back to saint-malo, it was fucking freezing again. finally made it to the pizza place and boy i was satisfied.

after having such a great time today, we did some research on where to go next. it was either bayeux, chambourg or some closer destination
. unfortunately, the train line and schedule didnt quite work out the way we planned, we decided to stay one more day here before saying our goodbyes.

Wednesday
24th: St. Malo revisited - Day 4
Day 41

(st malo: the tide)

the day today is pretty cloudy. so declared it a lazy day. we had to go back to the same place for lunch this time coz chai-i had to have the pizza there and i ended up getting the spaghetti hah.

hung out in a really cool tea house the whole afternoon.

on the way back, we saw the most amazing tides. the waves came sweeping into the street. apparently its very dangerous and every year, there are a few deaths. people thought its amazing, they stand there and watch, a big wave comes and take them in.

we decided to cook that night and chai-i made a feast. it only cost us 2 euros each. hah.

Wednesday
25th October - Friday 2nd November: Nantes revisited - Days 1 - 9
Day 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50

(nantes: revisited)

(nantes: revisited again)

(nantes: in japan)

eventhough i didn't see the sun at all for the first 3 days, it felt so good to be back in nante
s. there is something about this place which i just cant describe. its just a feeling i guess. totally love it. it feels so much like i belong here. i just wanna settle down here. when the sun finally shone, it felt GREAT !

stephane came here for the weekend and as usual it was great hanging out with him. he gave me a great tour and history lesson on nantes.

i found a art house cinema here that actually shows english films in english with french subtitles. i ended up watching 2 films.
1. control - an english film about the lead singer of joy division
2. paranoid park - a gus van sant film. i used to watch every single gus' film right up to psycho. was a big big fan. suddenly i stopped. i dont really know why but after watching this film, i m killing myself for not having watched his other films. now i have to go back to sydney and dig out all his other films that i missed.

found some extremely cool coffee bars :-
1. the cult cafe
2. live bars
3. le lieu unique
4. hangers a bananas

be sure to check these places out should anyone chose to visit me here in the near future.

found a shop that makes sting instruments. how cool.

there is a little japanese garden here. u can actually experience being in japan in nantes. cool.

above all, i did have a traumatizing experience. i needed a haircut bad and since all the french look so good, i thought i wanna look like them. so i went into this hairdresser. she spoke no english at all.
she went "blah blah blah"
i went "just a trim. A TRIM"
she went "blah blah blah" and cut cut cut and "ok ?"
i went "no enough not too much"
she went cut cut cut somemore ? "ok ?"
i went "yes enough ok ok ok"
and she went "yes ?" cut cut cut somemore and "ok?"
and finally i shouted "stop !"
and she went "good good good ok !"

note:
kaori !!! I MISS YOU. at times like this, i really really feel homesick !

also managed to talk to quite a few locals here. its interesting to dwell into the minds of the french people. apparently there is this little competition between rennes and nantes. almost like the sydney and melbourne thing. people here seems to be angry with the current political situation. i dont like controversy so i won't post it here. their president isnt very popular at all. young people here have big hopes and dreams. they actually believe that there should be a fair world. they so should grow up.

ok thats the end of france.
lets do abit of summary ...

the valuables:
lost : susanne's rainbow umbrella, my cap, my beanie, one white t-shirt (dont even ask me where it went), a sock (not a pair but one)

the past:

paris to tours: here and now

Dear friends,

so i checked my post and was absolutely amazed that it has been a hit. people have been checking it out hoping for an update and even hassling for an update. didnt realize people actually enjoy me rambling on about shit. i smelled my shit this morning and yeah, they do smell pretty good. i think it has some pizza from last night's dinner and chicken from lunch.
the sudden break from posting was not because i was slacking off but many things happened over the last 2 weeks. very emotional. lets recap ... there were ...

1. joy
2. happiness
3. excitement
4. breakdown
5. depression
6. frustration
7. adventure
8. inspiration
9. amazement
10. emancipation
11. pain
12. laughter
13. etc

yes all of that in the last 2 weeks. very emotional. but all is good now. some how everything always work out in the end. all the pieces somehow do fall into place. i am back and will be posting again. so this one will be a long one.

also i am very impressed that people like matt on and keong found their way into my post. i guess word of mouth is the best publicity. btw everyone, start spreading word about my new film. there will be plenty of sex and nudity in it. all hot models. it will be out in july 2008. start spreading the word guys ...

now back to the posts.

Thursday 4th Oct: Annecy
Day 21

(annecy - farewell)

had an amazing time with Chai I. exploring the city, went kayaking and then went jumping into the freezing lake. she is as crazy as me. tried some amazing french food for lunch and dinner. still i missed a good asian meal.

Friday 5th Oct: Lyon
Day 22

(lyon - ruins and churches)

ok arrived at lyon. after having such a great time in annecy, it was difficult to leave. was feeling quite sad. lyon is a nice place but i would have enjoyed it more if i had been there before annecy. hostel was packed with students. and the youth hostel was like so far up the hill. the climb up there was a killer. anyway the cathedral up the so called mountain was amazing. it has the most decorative interior ever so far in my trip. worth the hike. found the opera house and wanted to see an opera. but there were no show till next week. what a shame. instead, sat down by the steps and looked at people walking by. and interesting experience. this is what i concluded.
1. a common waiting ground
2. every guy who arrived, picked up his cell to make a call
3. girls are fashionably late. only guys seemed to be waiting for their dates
4. people just litter. a chick walked by and dumped some magazine on the floor

saw an interesting couple and decided to stalk them for a bit. its unusual to see a couple both good looking. rare find. look at every couple out there, usually one looks good and the other is a big disappointment. i mean just look at your partner, or look at yourself in the mirror. BINGO !

(lyon - city)

Saturday 6th: Paris - Part 1
Day 23

(paris - the arrival)

Arrived at Paris gare de lyon. was great to see stephane standing at the end of the track at 11.00am like he said he would. great day to arrive because it was "white night" - one night in a year where the entire city comes alive with are installation - from 7pm to 7am. people are not suppose to sleep. gawd knows why the french calls it "white night" (a literal translation from french) which is suppose to mean "sleepless night". also the rugby was on. french against new zealand. cant imagine the chaos if they lost. anyway the french won and the city went wild. great atmosphere and a great day to arrive. i was taken around paris the whole night and literally saw the whole of paris by foot. it was great. weird feeling. even saw the church featured in the davinci code.

(paris - at first glance)

(paris - white night)

Sunday 7th paris: Paris - Part 2
Day 24

(paris - free museum day)

slept in. first night in my entire trip i slept through the night. it felt great and the couch was terrible comfortable. it was free museum today. so we went to the pompidue center. great exhibition, great company. another great day. of did i tell you that stephane is such a great chef. nice french food yet again.

Monday 8th: Paris - Part 3
Day 25

(paris: me being a typical tourist)

so i did the eiffel tower because i had to not because i wanted to. queued up for 3 hours before i got to the top. and when i was up there, i felt like i was in america. it was bombarded with insipid american tourist. really cant take them anywhere. a friend once told me that if i wanted to feel at home, go to the base of the eiffel tower. everyone there is asian. well he is wrong. its an american village. the view was great. saw the entire paris except ... the tower itself. what a dissapointment. you dont see the icon up there. also my sunnies screw came off again. damn. need to find an optometrist to get it fixed.
done it and never had to do it ever again.

went to the louvre next. was huge. was also packed. this time its worse. the louvre was hijacked by chinese tourist who just wanted to snap pictures and not appreciate art. i was constantly asked or pushed aside by those fucking chinese tourist who kept telling me that i was in the way of their pictures. fucking hell. well. for all you chinese out there, if you want to feel at home in paris, go to the louvre NOT the eiffel tower. the eiffel tower is for americans !

my day ended well. went to Pigalle - the french red light district and did the sound walk (a present from mei). was so so good. and amazing experience. i came in my pants. thank you mei.

a little side trivia.
what does the red light district in paris and sydney has in common ?
a large coca-cola sign ! yes ! coca-cola is the proud sponsor of pornography ! everyone GO SUPPORT COCA-COLA !

Tuesday 9th: Paris - Part 4
Day 26

(paris: legend and the opera)

Exhaustion. was super tired and slept in. decided to cook the french dudes a chinese meal. went hunting for come chinese ingredients. went to olympides and its like a whole chinatown in an apartment block. i found the biggest chinese grocery store. it was huge. 4 times the size of randwick oriental store. felt at home when i heard people speaking cantonese in there. wow. i even got to use cantonese in there.

went to visit the opera house and later to see edith piaf. she looked so much at peace and was surrounded with flowers. what an icon. what an amazing person. she gave me her blessings and i moved on.

that night i whipped up a good chinese meal. i had some 'man tao' for entree, for mains, i stirred fried some pork with oyster sauce, japanese tofu with eggs and boiled some 'kai lan' with some more oyster sauce. yummy. i thought it was a great success except for the rice. we chinese are so used to cooking rice with a rice cooker. it was my first time cooking rice on a pot. man it was embarrassing. a chinese burning rice. fucking hell. i later got some tips from adraain on how to cook rice with a microwave. (another embarrassment. a chinese asking a caucasian on how to cook rice ! urgh !) and for desert, i made "tong yuun' with ginger soup. the look of their faces was priceless.

also, i got some japanese green tea. what a life.

Wednesday 10th: Paris - Part 5
Day 27
ok this is the day i broke down with depression. i didnt leave the house at all. but later got the strength to get out of the house to go to the palais de tokyo. i decided to cancel nyc trip and the funny thing is that my throat miraculously healed.

Thursday 11th Strasbourg - Part 1
Day 28

(strasbourg- germany ?)

had to get out of paris. also i decided to go look for Chai I. tried to catch the early train to strasbourg but the early train was sold out. (8.24am) so had to catch the 10.24am. had time to go to air france to try to cancel the tix. i was told that it cant be cancelled and its non refundable but she also reminded me about travel insurance !!!! what a champ.

anyway when i reached strasbourg, i changed my NYC trip to the 2nd of nov. cant waste the tix. and dont trust travel insurance. wanted to go there for halloween but it doubled the cost of my ticket and i thought the hell with it. will be celebrating my 26th birthday in NYC !!! woo hoo. so if anyone wants to give me anything for my birthday, just give me cash. email me for my bank details :P

strasbourg is close to the german border. lots of germans there and more people speak english here. saw the cathedral and smiled. they were right again - i was told that when i saw the cathedral i will like it. i saw it and i loved it. i was smiling again.

unfortunately, my cough has came back again.

Friday 12th Strasbourg - Part 2
Day 29
went to watch the film about the astronomical clock in the cathedral. was so boring that i almost fell asleep. they had a demonstration of the clock after the film. yeah a few wooden figurines came walking out of the clock, a baby banging on the bells and a chicken going coo coo. big deal. and all the tourist was like wow and impressed, taking photos and shit and i was like, u must be kidding me. right after the clock done coo cooing, a souvenir stand about the clock IN the cathedral miraculously opened. i was like u must seriously must be kidding me. who the fuck would want to buy these shit. but then again, insipid americans.

the town itself is pretty cool. nice old looking buildings. decided to track anti clockwise back around france since i had 3 weeks to kill before heading back to paris to catch a flight to NYC. so next stop, carcassonne. but its too long of a distance. so i m going to break it into 2. i will go on a side mission to valence :)

Saturday 13th: Valence
Day 30

(valence)

so i got lost on the way to the station. typical me but anyway when i got to the station, major power failure ! total chaos at the station. managed to get on board the train anyway.

arrived at valence. nice little town. the rugby was on. french versus england. it such a small town that literally everyone was out in the streets watching the match. feels like there were only some 1000 people living in this town but anyway i am on a secret mission here ;) well, its a secret, so if i post it here it wont be a secret anymore right ?

Sunday 14th: Carcassonne - yes again
Day 31

(carcassonne - reveisited)

its actually feels good to come back to somewhere familiar.

met this canadian guy who just had a bad luck streak. he arrived last night and the hostel was packed out and he had to sleep in the park, freezing cold. also he had his passport and all his money stolen and is stuck in france for the next 3 weeks until his passport get reissued. poor thing.

had another good look around the old city and crashed into bed early.

Monday 15th: Carcassonne - still there.
Day 32
to all you soon to be travelers. monday in france is dead. most shops are closed or the only open at 3pm. so dont even bother considering shopping in france on monday and most museum are closed on tuesday. and u think australians are lazy. meet the french.

had a really good conversation with a group of people at the youth hostel. this is one of the best part in traveling. meeting people, hearing their stories and be inspired. their conversations are enough to convince me to catch the next transport out to czech republic. so i thought i need to get back to paris and catch a plane to prague. and getting to paris from here is a killer. so i decided to go to tours and try to see the chateaus, and then catch the train back to paris and then to czech. went to the train station and bought an overnight train to tours. gawd. 8 hours on the over night train. but i have never taken a night train. so will be worth the experience.

went back to the youth hostel and made myself dinner. its so damn embarrassing to see the french and canadians cooking rice so successfully using a pot !!!!! gawd what has become of this world ? the guy at the reception offered to drive me to the station at 11.15pm. great. yes that same guy who i got to change my bookings last time i was here. was very tiring talking to him but had to be nice - free ride. i guess everything comes with a price.
weird thing was as we left, he said "say good bye to the old city because you might never come back."
i casually responded "nah. i will be back !"
when we reached the station, i realized that he forgotten to give me back my membership card. so he drove me back to the hostel which was in the old city. and it suddenly hit me. "see i did tell you i will be back !"
hah.

Tuesday 16th: Tours - Day 1
Day 33

(tours- amboise)

what a ride on the train. uncomfortable as it is, i managed to get some sleep. checked into the hostel and decided to go see some castle. and guess what ? i saw Chai I there. whoa. impressed. anyway, we hung out the whole day and went to see leonardo da vinci's house. all the excitement, i lost my cap. urgh. and my hair is so out of shape and i have nothing to hide it. gawd. i m devastated. also my chest is starting to hurt.

Wednesday 17th: Tours - Day 2
Day 34
rained in the morning and declared "lazy day today". went walking around the town. lovely little town. went and had tea in a little tea house. very relaxing. unfortunately my chest is hurting more. so made an effort to go see a doctor. was quite difficult because he spoke little english. but was an interesting experience. you walk into the clinic. u see people sitting in a room. no reception, nothing. just a few chairs in a room. then the doctor comes walking out from another door and call for the next in line. when its your turn, you follow him in to the room. anyway it was worth the money because i had physical contact with the doctor !!!! he examined me and even took my blood pressure. all that for 22 euros and 20 minutes of his time. he wrote the prescription and handle the money all by himself. in sydney you pay like 40 bucks for 2 minutes. and most of the time the doctor dont even touch you. doctors in sydney are ripoffs !!!

anyway he told me i had a chest infection. didnt give me any antibiotics because i didnt have fever. instead, he gave me some panadol for the pain and some cough syrup.

found a cinema that showed movie undubbed. yay ! finally got to watch a film !!!! you dont what it is like to not watch a movie in the cinema for such a long time. it was great. went to watch "this is england". felt soooo good.

Thursday 18th: Tours - Day 3
Day 35
decided to stay here and heal. Chai I was supposed to leave for st-malo today but all trains and busses were on strike. whole of france. so she is stuck for another day. i slept the whole day and just went out for dinner. my cough got alot better but my chest is not feeling good at all. did had a good dinner to finish the day.

Friday 19th: Tours - Day 4
Day 36
couldnt get out at all because my chest hurt so bad. had to stay in bed the whole time. forced myself to get up at around 4.15 pm. went out for a walk. need to get some warmer clothes as its starting to get really cold. cant hold out with my summer clothing much longer. looked around but found nothing worth buying. also went walking by the river and see the sunset. was nice. still i hope my chest dont hurt so much.

(tours - and the sun went down)

annecy: oh wow oh wow somemore

hey prudence,

so you moved to a more exciting project yet ? i m so relaxed right now i cant even imagine working ever again in my life. haha. the trip has been great and i the mix between a hectic trip and a relaxing one is brilliant. hope all is well at your end.

(the lake)

Day 20: a great discovery
so i decided to stay for another night since i am really enjoying relaxing. practically spent the whole day by the lake. just lying there. wanted to hire a canoe out but decided not to but watch the kids play instead. there were this school group and one girl particularly had problem getting into her kayak. i think one side of her bum was larger than the other and she had problem balancing. she over turned twice. got up changed the kayak and tipped over again, change to another one and tipped over again. i was struggling so hard not to laugh. finally she got a 2 seater one and shared with her teacher. i admire her determination though.

i spent the last 18 days taking so many pictures. i have taken like 5.5 gigs of photos already. that shocked alot of travelers when i told them that. most ppl who had already travelled for 3 months have yet to fill up their 2 gigs card. whats amazing is that the place i spent the longest in, i took the least photos. just absorbing the surrounding and the moment.

met this taiwanese chick at the dinner table and decided to extend my stay one more night just so i can hang out with her :P

Annecy: oh wow somemore !

Hey andrew,

so, the submission is over and unwinding time ? i m having a great time unwinding. its such a fantastic feeling. so think everyone should be in my position right now. i hope all is good with you and more good news to follow. i m looking forward to hear them all.

(annecy part deux)

Day 19: uphill battle
so i decided i really like this place and i didnt get to see much yesterday and wanted to be cheap, i checked out of the hotel and went looking for the youth hostel. man, the hostel is right up at the top of the hill and the road leading up there is STEEP ! thank gawd there are wheels on my bag plus i had this huge bottle to add to the weight of the bag and so far i had only consumed 3 teaspoon full from it. urgh.

the hostel looks amazing. so comfortable and new and clean. i had the room all to myself. its almost deserted there. its almost overlooking the very beautiful lake. i brought my swimmers and head down to the lake. the water was so damn inviting. i felt the water and it was super freezing. then i saw a group of elderly people probably in their 70s going into the water. also there were some kids at most 5 going into the water. i was like. if they can do it, so can i. i jumped into the water from the pier. gawd, i lasted for at most 2 minutes and i had to get up. no regrets. i m glad i did it. it was a sunny day. i spent the rest of the day lying by the pier. it was so damn relaxing i finally felt that i for the first time i am actually on a holiday.

at night at the bar, there were only this aussie girl who now works in belfast, another aussie bloke who lives in manly, a french dude and the bar tender was from central america. oh what a night.

ok i am missing kaori. big issue. i so need a haircut now. cant decide if i should get it cut in paris, new york or barcelona. do i wanna look like a french, american or spanish. gawd. the decisions you gotta make while you are on holiday. ... loving each day !!!!

xxx. j.

Monday, October 1, 2007

Annecy: oh wow

hey karina ...

so, u miss me yet ? well i m kinda missing having you around, my afternoon grey earl tea sessions (full cream milk and no sugar) and having someone to constantly chat too. i hope all is well and i m very sure u are missing me more hah.

(feels like venice althought i dont know what venice is)

Day 18: sleeping in.
so i had to leave this ghostless town as soon as possible. but i over slept abit and had the quickest breakfast ever and then grabbed my bag and headed to the bus station at 8.35. The bus arrived at 8.45 and i reached the station at 9.00. so i thought great. the train leaves at 9.26. i have 26 minutes to get the ticket, jump on the train and i am on my way. went to to the ticket counter and the queue was loooong. looks like everyone is trying to escape this town too. i was like i had to get on the train coz if i dont the next one is at 12.35. i just had to. so i saw the ticket machine went on it and everythings great until i had to pay with my credit card. apparently they dont accept the australias card coz we dont use the chip system. we use the old fashion magnetic swipe. urgh !

so i jumped back onto the queue which is now longer. when it reached my turn, it as 9.26 exactly. and suddenly the schedule on the screened blinked. train delayed for 5 minutes. i was like YES ! got my tix in 2 minutes and ran to the platform and jumped on the train. the train left as soon as i got on. i was like great. i sat down looked at the screen and it said, destination: genova. urgh ! i was like great. now what. so i kindly asked the person on the next row. this italian guy said, yes this train is heading to annecy but no its not stopping there. there are 2 trains connecting and it will split later and the train to annecy is in front. so u gotta jump off the next stop and move forward. i was like great thank you and started telling him how great italians are and how i should go visit italy. he was so glad that he helped me.

arrived at the station. whoa. this place is awesome. its so beautiful. this french was telling me that there are 5 most beautiful cities in france and annecy is one of them 5. checked into the hotel and went for a look around.

saw a pharmacy along the way. gave in and went into to try to get something for my throat. i asked the lady if she spoke english and she said, "a little".
so i explained and she gave me this huge bottle of cough syrup and said "take 1 teaspoon 3 times a day". i m like you are kidding me right ? "can i just drink the whole bottle ?" she got so worried and said, "no no maximum 4 times a day ! no more !" so i paid and took the huge bottle that i have to lug around now. opened the box and read the instruction. gawd. there were so many precautions on not to take this drug, it almost sounds as if this bottle is poisoned. i m desperate. i'd take anything.

went back to the hotel and slept the day away ...

Grenoble: has the ghost fled ?

dear daniel,

so u are now my myspace friend haha. you have to sign up to facebook so i can have one more friend. hehe. all this traveling is great. will have to catch up with you soon on msn sometime.

Day 17: stranger than fiction
so grenoble. town surrounded by mountains. so fucking what.

anyway, my train ride. took 3 hours. change once. there was this chick who sat within viewing distance. she is quite tan and blond. so u know light hair on dark skin is pretty obvious. she was wallowing a long roll but thats the norm. what was disturbing was i noticed she had more hair on her arms than i have hair on my legs. now thats disturbing. eeeewwww !

then there was this other guy who sat on the opposite side. i was trying so hard not no burst out laughing but kinda feel bad afterwards coz he was a really nice guy. ok i do have a heart. well, he wasnt fat and/or ugly and/or hairy and/or smelly. so i'll be nice and not say what i saw. ok i cant change the subject who the fuck told me to come to grenoble BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY WHY THE FUCK DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME TO TO COME HERE !!!! fucking waste of time. this place is completely dead. its sunday and everything is close. even VIDEO X is closed coz fucking porn needs to go to church. fuck man. even the ghosts have fled this town.

still it was interesting to see these events :-
1. a truck driving through a small tunnel. i was the only one who thought it was an amazing tight squeeze. everyone else just wanted to get through. idiots. why am i constantly surrounded by idiots ? anyway, the driver noticed that i took notice and i was cheering and encouraging him all along. i must say he was very skilled. he pull through and thank me for supporting him.
2. 2 idiots trying to fit a oversized glass table top into the back of their car. i heard a loud crash.

3. this other car driving with a cupboard in the trunk and the trunk was left open. the cupboard went flying out onto the streets.
4. saw my first french live performance. they sung in english. so much for french live music. you can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/centenaire

(watch that truck squeeze ...)

my cough has gone all time worse. i leaving at sunrise for annecy.

Montpellier: people city

dear matt,

so cool that you subscribed to my RSS. i didn't even know you can do that. need to catch up on technology when i get back. i try to write abit every night before i go to bed and post them whenever i get access to the internet. so i dont like spent hours on the net everyday. some of these deserted towns here in france dont even have dial up. haha

Day 16 - uncool vibe

i was talking to the guy at the reception. he was super friendly. so i started asking him for some advise and where to go next and got him to book me a night at montpellier. as we went on chatting, i attracted more people into the conversation, suddenly there were a few more french people giving me advise. and then i thought it would be better to go somewhere else instead and so forth. so i got the receptionist to change a few bookings and made a couple of new ones and in the end, somehow i was convienced, montpellier is the place to go. so i got the receptionist to rebook again. for some strange reason he stopped being so friendly. french. they are just weird people. dont understand them.

anyway.

got to montpellier and damn. the place is crowded. i have never seen so many people in europe until today. i walked through the mall and people everywhere. packed. it was like walking in wong kok in hong kong where all you see is heads. plus the fucking rugby world cup is on. come on who the fuck watches that. them losers.

(people everywhere ...)

anyway.

turned a corner away from the mall strip, deserted. almost no one in sight. go figure. its amazing how people are just concerntrated in the strip of the mall. the entire population in montpellier lives in the mall.

(people magically disappeared !)

anyway.

even though the architecture and the historical feel to the building is nice, but somehow the city feels very cold and uninviting. also it rained on me again. fucking hell. 16 days in europe and it rained like 9 days.

i just need to escape from this city.
anyway. seen the city, decided to avoid south of france .. nice, cannes etc. since is getting cold not worth going to the beach. instead, lets head to the alps. booked the next destination ... grenoble. leaving at sunrise.

Carcassonne: The arrival

hey mei agian,

so i read your email about lies and living a fake life. well you will love this one.

Day 14 - Get a load of this ;)

wanted to stay for another day at la rochelle but the hostel was fully booked. so i tot great. go to toulouse then. but the chick at the reception said, no u cant, the hostel was recently burnt down.
urgh.

so i said fine, "how about tours ?"
she called the place, "sorry fully booked for the day but u can go to blois ?"
i was like i m trying to avoid someone who lives there even though the thought of
making a call, putting up a front to just to get a free night's accommodation ? nah i am not that low.

finally i decided, what the hell, lets go to carcassonne then.

being smart:-
so i thought who the fuck pays for public toilets. i was at the train station. there was these cubicles where u have to slot in 0.30 euros. so i thought. i'll be smart. i will wait for someone to co
me out and when some old lady did, i held the door open for her and she kindly said "merci" and i went in before the door shut. genius. as i began to pee, the whole cubicle began to clean itself and suddenly i was being splashed all over! fucking hell. so much that. come on who the fuck pays to use the loo !!!

the train ride was interesting. took me 5 hours to get there plus had to change trains twice.

(dark clouds following the train)

being smarter:-
i settled into my seat. there were these 2 chicks sitting on the other side. i noticed they were wearing name tags with blah blah blah jesus christ blah blah blah written on it. after establishing a couple of eye contacts and smiles, they couldnt resist me any longer (hey i cant even resist me) the came to talk to me. i was like great. some one to chat to. they spoke pretty good english.
they were like "hi we are missionaries .. " yeah and all that introduction shit.
so i was being friendly and i just played along. trying to avoid th
e big Q.
it was all find we talked about france and traveling etc etc. and then came the big Q !
"do you believe in god ?"
i looked at them, "yes. i believe in many gods"
"huh what do u mean ?"
"i believe there are many gods, u know god of thunder, goddess of love, medicine god etc..?
"huh ?"
i looked at them and whispered, "are you a god ?"
they looked at each other and shook their heads. so i said, "look that that guy sitting there looking at us. he could be a god spying on us !"
"i have never heard this before can u explain some more ?"
"well, i believe gods are everywhere, they watch and help us. and they bring balance and harmony to our lives. but sometime they bring us may surprises."
and i went on and on about the ying
and yang and then about the goddess of love for instant, she can hit you when you least expect it. i went on to tell them about my lesbian lover who has licked more cunts then they have ever said "amen" and how she sucks me off only to ... in her own words "swallow some holy water to cleanse her soul". and how she is off making some porn film with 50 other chicks in italy and before i could continue to tell them about the dungeon i own in sydney, the train arrived at my terminal.
i got up and say goodbye and left. i didn't even had time to tell them its rude in australia to stare at people with their mouth wide opened.

i got off the train, it rained on me. suddenly my after life dont seem so bright.

(random city shots)

i walked into the old city, i saw the castle walls, i told myself, i had to stay one more night. so i checked in for 2 nights.

(the arrival)

(view to the fortress town)

the fort that surrounds the old town looks stunning. i thought the old town is one of the nicest old town i have seen in this trip. love the big shutter windows everywhere. the tourist crowded around the town center, as usual, and i walked every empty streets, such a good vibe.

Nantes: Not "like a bullshit yea ?" but le corbusier.

Eric,

so, i am crazy but u must me so proud of me. i went out of my way to see an architecture piece and not just any architect's work but Le Corbusier ! Yes. i walked 1 hr 30 minutes looking for the Maison Radieuse. its actually not in nantes but in another suburb called reze. and yes i walked all the way there. which i m glad i did because i saw lots of other interesting things long the way. boy, i am impressed !

Day 12 - casual encounters

so i thought i stay one more day here and i m determined to go look for le corbusier's building. from the map i got it didn't look too far but i didnt realize the map was scaled at 1:1000. fucking hell !

Encounter #1
This woman came up to me and went "blah blah blah blah".
jxe, went "huh ? english ?"
woman "oh" took out a poster showing god and destruction.
"do you believe that god and he brings destruction to the world" (along that lines but broken english)
jxe shook his head
woman, "how u explain that ?"
jxe removed his sunnies, looked into her eyes and responded, "bad karma !" and put his sunnies back on.
woman laughs profusely and responded, "maybe haha!"
jxe walkes away.

along the way i saw some really interesting buildings, warehouses, structures and cranes. one that i was most impressed was the Palais de Justice.

Encounter #2
i was taking pictures, this guy came up to me and went "blah blah blah blah".
jxe, went "huh ? english ?"
he went, " no blah blah blah blah ..."
jxe just noded and noded and smiled and noded ...
more, "blah blah blah" and then we shook hands and we walked away.

(
Palais de Justice)

(
Maison Radieuse - in sight)

when the Maison Radieuse was in sight, i got very excited because with my lousy sense of direction, i was actually heading the right direction. the booklet said i should call and make a booking for a guide and pay 5 euros. though fuck this shit i'd just turn up and look for the guide. when i arrived, i was really impressed by the building. i was surprised that its a residential apartment and people live there. really run down building. went to the reception but no one was there and everything was written in french. so i thought fuck it. i m here i may as well give myself a tour and go up the elevator.

(
Maison Radieuse - ground level)

people were all staring at me and all going blah blah blah. i just ignore them and went to every level. its just literally a corridor leading to the individual units. so i saw nothing.

Encounter #3
she saw me lost and all clueless. "blah blah blah, tourist ?"
jxe, noded, "yes, english ?"
woman, "a little, blah blah blah, come come, blah blah blah"
jxe followed.

anyway, she took me to her pad, unit no 633. she had a little 4 year old kid. could tell she didnt have much, living very modestly. yet she was really proud that she is living in a designer building. to my surprised, she took out a folder filled with information about le corbusier and the building and started explaining to me about the building. the pad is a duplex and give me a tour around the pad. she was explaining the desgn concept of the pad to me, the balcony, the kitchen, the arched doors to the toilets and baths, the colors, the floor materials etc. i could only understand 1/4 of what she said but enough to put the pieces together. she even had a 3D section of her pad. i was so impressed with the spacial planning of the pad. i tot it was abit inappropriate to take any photos, so i took pictures with my mind. its such an experience. love it.

(
Maison Radieuse - roof top: kindergarten)

(me and
Maison Radieuse and more)

when i left, it rained, so i had my packed lunch under the building.

head back to the city and it rained some more. i ran to a shelter.

Encounter #4
this guy started talking to me in what he later claimed to be japanese.
jxe, "errr english ?"
guy, "oh i love speaking in english, i love expressing myself in english"
jxe, what the fuck ?
anyway he went on about shit and more shit, to world piece and how he just found out he is a jewish and there are jewish out there who dont even know they are jewish.
jxe rolled his eyes.
he asked me what i did today and i said i went to the Maison Radieuse.
guy, "no way. i live there !" he took out his wallet and showed me his address and then went on and on again.
the rained stopped. jxe smiled. we parted.

what a day.

back at the hostel at night, got abit upset that i couldnt book anything for bordeaux tomorrow.

Encounter #5
this korean guy saw me feeling disturb and asked me whats wrong. i told him why and he said, "no problem, go to la rochelle, very nice."
so i said, "really? ok!" and chatted to him and his wife all night.
coincident ? its the moon cake festival tonight and mr korean is called Moon !

i love this city. this is by far the best city i have been. love to live here for a couple of years. if only i could speak french ... and what a day !

Nantes: it gets better and better

Hey Brooke,

so found me on facebook and we are friends again. haha. hows everything ? like i said i have so much questions to ask but i m sure u will soon write me a long email telling me all about it from japan to now in canada. i bet you had a great time and now is my time. glad u found your way to this post and u are loving it.

Day 11 - second impression
ok. i had to catch a train and a bus to get here. it took me 4 hours to get here. my first impression of this city is em. boring.

additional notes from me journal:
ok i walked into a park after arrival and i saw a couple in their 80s french kissing. boy i was scarred !!!

but as i walked around it grew on me. i dont know what it is but maybe just the vibe. people are quite friendly here. they all give me the friendly smile. but hey, i'd do the same to me.

(streetscape)

(some castle)

a cross between a old and new city works very well. lots of industrial looking buildings. i wondered to this place called, la galarie des machine. the structure looks amazing with the giant mechanical elephant looks so in place.

(
la galarie des machine)

(me and
la galarie des machine)

after spending half a day exploring, i have decided to stay another day coz i m loving this city. also i feel its more economical to stay more than one day at a place. another great traveling tip from jxe !

got chatty with this french dude who was doing fashion design. he is specializing in designing clothes for kids. i managed to talk him into designing for dogs too coz i said there's a big market in australia. haha. i dont even like dogs but it made me look intelligent. hell i am intelligent. haha.
